Two days after encountering the bandit patrol, our heroes encountered a second patrol consisting of a group of hobgoblins lead by a human male. Were the hobgoblins wore normal chain shirts and leather armor, the human was wearing a mithral chain shirt. It was a short fight but brutal fight.
Later that day they came upon the entrance to the bandits lair, it was a wooden palisade and a few tents outside of an old Dwarven mine. After a long, tiring fight, in which several of the heroes went down, they were bruised, battered but victorious.
After resting for eight hours, they proceeded to enter the mine with Rokan in the lead using his dwarven senses to look for danger and lead them through the old mine tunnels and leaving Kevalmin to watch their rear at the entrance of the mine in case any of the bandits that might be outside the encampment returned. after a few minutes they found a small cavern that had been converted into a mess hall with kitchen and food storage. Inside the mess hall was a group of gnolls and hobgoblins eating a meal. the fighting was touch and go but the heroes were able to succeed in defeating the bandits and securing the mess hall. after retrieving Kevalmin they barricaded themselves inside with one of the tables. They rested up a bit before the kitchen crew came to prepare the next meal. Rokan put on a little puppet show for them using the heads of the fallen bandits and was aided by Kodger with some illusions they managed to scare off one of the kitchen helpers. Finding the mess hall blocked off the cook, who happened to be an ogre, proceeded to knock down the barricade in one mighty blow breaking the table in two. During the fight an owlbear had wandered into the mine following the trail of easy meals and mauled the cook. Sir Alastair offered protection from the owlbear and his companions to the last hobgoblin standing if he surrendered. He did so with out blinking an eye. The party quickly rebarricaded the mess hall with another table and several of the crates that were in the cavern to reinforce the barricade. After a few minutes the owlbear still hungry wandered of into the mine looking for more food. Several minutes later the party heard the echoing screams and the screeching roars of the owlbear. Deciding to venture out further into the mine, the party found the unconscious and bleeding to death owlbear. from it the followed a trail of blood and carnage that it left in it wake. upon reaching the end of it’s trail the found and fought a lone gnoll sentry. Hearing the noise of battle several gnolls and hobgoblins near by readied an ambush for the party. they almost walked into it had Rokan not noticed them. one of the gnolls had gotten to close in in eagerness to fight. Running low on health and magic the fight took longer then any of the other so far. When down to just a single disarmed gnoll, he ran further back into the mine. Sir Alastair gave chase and was rebuffed by the gnoll with is shield and was knocked prone at his feet. What the party didn’t know was that in the next room was a necromancer prepping spells for the coming fight. after the rest of the party had caught up to Sir Alastair, the gnoll went down but he had bough the mage enough time to buff himself and summon several skeletal warriors to fight for him, after a failed attempt to weaken the barbarian the skeletal warriors were defeated. The mage had a few more tricks up his sleeve. He managed to summon a skeletal owlbear to fight the party and light it on fire with a fiendish blue flame that didn’t seem to harm the skeletal owlbear at all. The owlbear proceeded remove one of Rokan’s hands before Kevalmin in a fit of rage smashed it into the floor and ended the mage’s life. shortly after that Kevalmin fell unconscious do to his injuries. The party in no shape to explore anymore of the mine or safely make their way back outside barricaded themselves into the necromancer’s sleeping chamber as best the could and hoped that the bandits wouldn’t come looking for them. As they settled down to try and get what sleep they could some of them searched through the mage’s possessions, finding his spellbook which Kodger started flipping through to see what new spells he could add to his repertoire. And on one of the bookcases behind some of the books Sheeva found a small jar about three inches in circumference and two inches deep filled with a white paste that smelled of herbs. The mage was wearing a mithral chain shirt like the human fighter they had fought the day before
